Presidio Officers’ Club, Building 50

Long before there was the city of San Francisco, there was the Presidio of San Francisco. First established in 1776, the adobe walls of the Officers' Club stand testament to California's beginnings. Throughout the 20th century, the renowned Presidio Officers' Club was an exclusive gathering place for Army brass and their families. In 2014, the club reopened as a fully public museum and cultural destination following a three-year award-winning renovation. The Officer’s Club project required a complete rehabilitation including the restoration of the entire historic space, addition of a new exhibit space and event venues, seismic upgrades and accessibility improvements for people with disabilities. The 2,955sf Ortega Ballroom features panoramic bay and forest vistas and seats 160 banquet style or holds 300 for receptions. With the Officer’s Club being hundreds of years old, the project presented unique preservation and energy efficiency challenges. Green features included use of 100 percent FSC-certified wood products, maximized daylight, low-VOC paints, adhesives, and building materials, the use of regionally sourced materials and recycled building materials, water efficient fixtures, and optimized building energy performance with energy-efficient systems and controls. The LEED Silver-certified project earned the Preservation Design award from the California Preservation Foundation (CPF). The Officers’ Club restoration represents an exciting new chapter for San Francisco’s Presidio.
